Universal Music India (UMI), a division of Universal Music Group (UMG), the global leader in music-based entertainment, has announced a definitive agreement with Excel Entertainment, one of India’s foremost film and digital content studios. The transaction values Excel Entertainment at ₹2,400 crore (approximately €257 million), with UMI acquiring a 30% minority equity stake.

This strategic investment establishes a long-term partnership between UMI and Excel Entertainment, aimed at accelerating Excel’s growth while strengthening UMI’s presence in the rapidly expanding Indian market.

Excel Entertainment has built a strong reputation for pioneering storytelling and delivering globally benchmarked Indian cinema and original digital content. Alongside its film and streaming slate, Excel has demonstrated consistent success in music particularly musical dramas, a genre with deep resonance in India and strong international appeal.

As part of the agreement, UMG will secure global distribution rights for all future original soundtracks from projects owned or controlled by Excel Entertainment. The partnership also includes the launch of a dedicated Excel music label, which will be globally distributed by UMG. Additionally, Universal Music Publishing Group will serve as Excel’s exclusive music publishing partner, enabling broader collaboration opportunities and the integration of UMG and UMI artists and repertoire into Excel’s future productions.
