OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is set to acquire Windsurf (formerly Codeium), an AI-powered coding assistant, for around $3 billion. This acquisition, OpenAI’s largest to date, aims to strengthen its position in the growing market for AI-driven coding tools, which help programmers generate code from natural language prompts.
Windsurf, valued at $3 billion after recent funding, was previously worth $1.25 billion. The acquisition comes amid rising competition from companies like Anthropic and Microsoft-owned GitHub, as well as startups in the space. This move follows OpenAI’s recent $40 billion financing round and the decision to maintain its non-profit structure.
