As India accelerates toward a digital-first economy, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has launched an awareness campaign to educate citizens about the growing threat of ‘digital arrest’ scams.
In these scams, fraudsters impersonate law enforcement officials, falsely accusing victims or their family members of crimes such as money laundering or tax evasion. They often make video calls dressed as police officers, using fake IDs, government logos, and intimidating language to pressure victims into transferring money or revealing personal information.
NPCI urges users to stay alert and verify any unexpected calls or messages about legal action. Genuine government authorities never demand money or conduct investigations over phone or video calls. Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious activity to the National Cybercrime Helpline at 1930 or via sancharsaathi.gov.in.
Through this campaign, NPCI aims to empower users to identify scams early, protect themselves and their loved ones, and build a safer digital payments ecosystem.
