Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) has announced Sony VIZHA, its new Tamil general entertainment channel, which is set to launch in October 2026. The move marks SPNI’s entry into Tamil general entertainment with a focus on premium, culturally rooted storytelling.
Sony VIZHA will feature original fiction, global reality formats, movies and tentpole entertainment across television and digital. The channel aims to combine stories grounded in Tamil culture, language and everyday life with the production scale and ambition to appeal to audiences beyond the region.
The channel’s name and logo were unveiled on Independence Day through a rendition of Tamizh Thai Vaazhthu performed by children. The song, traditionally sung at important occasions across Tamil Nadu, inspired the brand’s idea of taking Tamil pride and culture to audiences everywhere.
‘Vizha’ means celebration or festival in Tamil, reflecting the channel’s positioning around Tamil stories, talent, music, family, aspirations and popular entertainment. Its visual identity combines yellow and electric blue. While yellow draws inspiration from colours associated with celebrations in Tamil Nadu, including turmeric and marigold, electric blue adds a contemporary and premium character to the brand.
Rajaraman Sundaram, Chief Content Officer – South Regional, Sony Pictures Networks India, said the network is entering Tamil entertainment with humility and respect for the region’s strong creative legacy. He said Sony VIZHA aims to create stories that feel close to home while reflecting the aspirations and changing perspectives of a new generation of Tamil viewers.
The channel will also leverage SPNI’s experience in building established entertainment franchises such as Kaun Banega Crorepati, Indian Idol, CID and Crime Patrol, while developing a distinct Tamil identity of its own.
With Sony VIZHA, SPNI is positioning itself around local cultural relevance, emotional storytelling and premium execution, with an ambition to take Tamil stories to a wider audience.
