OpenAI has acquired NextSlide, an AI startup focused on turning prompts, notes, documents and research into editable presentation decks, with the company’s entire team joining OpenAI to work on ChatGPT.
Although the acquisition was completed earlier this year, it was publicly announced this week by Ahmed Beshry, founder of NextSlide, who has joined OpenAI as a Product lead.
Announcing the development on NextSlide’s website and LinkedIn, Beshry said the company’s mission was never just to generate slides faster but to make visual communication more accessible and help people express their ideas more effectively. He added that the team will continue pursuing the same vision at OpenAI by building AI products that enable users to create, communicate and transform ideas into meaningful work. Beshry also acknowledged OpenAI’s Fidji Simo for believing in NextSlide’s vision and welcoming the team to the company.
The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, and neither company revealed the size of the team joining OpenAI. The deal marks Beshry’s second successful startup exit after co-founding Caper AI, the smart-cart and cashier-less checkout startup acquired by Instacart in 2021.
The acquisition is part of OpenAI’s broader push into AI-powered productivity tools. It follows the company’s acquisitions of hardware startup io and analytics platform Statsig earlier this year, as OpenAI continues expanding ChatGPT’s capabilities beyond conversational AI into office productivity and content creation.
