Netflix has appointed Jay Hoag as chairman of its board, succeeding co-founder Reed Hastings following the company’s annual shareholders meeting on June 4.

The move marks the end of Hastings’ formal governance role at Netflix after nearly three decades with the company. Hastings had already stepped back from day-to-day operations in 2023 when he relinquished his position as co-Chief Executive Officer, handing operational leadership to Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters while continuing as board chairman.

As one of Netflix’s co-founders, Hastings played a pivotal role in transforming the company from a DVD-by-mail rental service into one of the world’s leading streaming platforms.

Hoag, who joined the Netflix board in 1999, is among the company’s longest-serving directors. He has served as lead independent director for more than ten years and now takes on the role of chairman as Netflix enters its next phase of growth.

Beyond Netflix, Hoag is best known as the co-founder of venture capital firm TCV and currently serves on the boards of Zillow Group and Peloton Interactive.

The appointment ensures continuity at the board level, with Hoag bringing more than two decades of experience and deep familiarity with Netflix’s business, strategy and long-term vision.
